Matsumoto & Clapperton New Ad Agency For Royal Hawaiian
Shopping Center
HONOLULU, HAWAII - Anne Murata, marketing director for
The Festival Companies, the management company for Royal
Hawaiian Shopping Center, has announced the selection of
Matsumoto & Clapperton as Royal Hawaiian Shopping
Center's advertising agency of record to handle the
rebranding of the 25-year-old center as it goes through
an $84 million renovation scheduled to begin in July
2005.
"Matsumoto & Clapperton are heavy hitters-extremely
creative in their marketing executions, and we're
excited that they will be bringing our new marketing
direction to fruition. As the center begins its
revitalization this year, the agency been tasked with
creating an interim ad campaign and a post-renovation
campaign, totally rebranding the center," said Murata.
"Their expertise, creativity and sensitivity to the
center's unique Hawaiian history and sense of place make
them an excellent marketing partner," she added.

Matsumoto
Clapperton
Murata's background as former group publisher and
national marketing manager of Guest Informant, and
before that, agency president of Murata Creative of
Honolulu and Medlin & Associates of Los Angeles, means
that her direction to the agency is "outside the bounds
of normal Honolulu advertising and marketing thinking,"
she says. "I expect them to move like the hottest shops
in LA or Tokyo, and this is what they do best."
At the agency, the account team includes: Craig
Matsumoto, creative director; Ed Clapperton, client
services director; Celeste Chikamori, account executive;
Wade Nishimuri, copywriter; and Jane Pascual, production
manager. Louise Saffery of inter-media is working in
partnership with Matsumoto & Clapperton to provide media
planning for the agency and client.
Internationally recognized for their creative work,
Matsumoto & Clapperton is consistently ranked among the
top advertising agencies in Hawaii by Pacific Business
News. To date, the agency has won nine first-place
awards from the Hawaii Advertising Federation and Best
in Show in the 2004 and 2005 Pele Awards, plus has had
work selected for the National ADDY competition.
"Craig Matsumoto and Ed Clapperton have more than 40
years of combined experience in advertising and
marketing, including work in prestigious agencies in Los
Angeles and New York, which gives their work an edge and
a depth that I want in our advertising and marketing,"
said Murata. "I'm very into creating great ads that move
people to market."
A graduate of the Art Center College of Design, Craig
Matsumoto has spent over 20 years with some of the
"hottest" agencies in California, including Della Femina
& Partners, Dailey & Associates, DMB&B and Abert Newhoff
& Burr. His clients have included Ralph Lauren Polo, DHL
Worldwide Express, Universal Studio Tours, Sheraton
Hotels, Carl's Jr., Castle & Cooke, American Honda,
Armoral, and Ala Moana Shopping Center. He was recently
honored as the Advertising Agency Association of
Hawaii's Advertising Man of the Year for 2005.
Ed Clapperton has both national and international agency
experience, including two years with the Mallory Factor
agency in New York City and seven years with Cove-Ito
Advertising in Tokyo, Japan, where he became bilingual
in Japanese. In Hawaii for more than a decade, he has
also served as vice president and account supervisor at
Peck Sims Mueller Advertising and as director of
interactive marketing for KHON2 television.

Wilma Mankiller, former Principal Chief of the Cherokee
Nation, will visit Native Winds Gift Gallery & Craft
Supply, between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Native Winds is
located at 1152 Koko Head Avenue, 2nd Level, in Kaimuki,
Honolulu. Everyone is welcome to attend this free
event.
Ms.
Mankiller will be signing copies of her latest book
entitled,
Every Day Is A Good Day: Reflections of Contemporary
Indigenous Women. In this new book,
nineteen strong and successful women provide a rare
glimpse into their lives with the hope that their voices
will be heard and their message understood: they bear
witness to the unforgivable acts that their people have
survived and take a step forward in mending old wrongs
and forgiving past hurts.
Wilma Mankiller was born in Mankiller Flats
near Tahlequah, Oklahoma. When she was twelve years
old, she was moved with her family to the San Francisco
area as part of the Bureau of Indian Affairs Relocation
program, an event she describes in her autobiography,
entitled
Mankiller: A Chief and Her People.
This was part of the government's plan to mainstream
rural Native Americans into American urban life.
Mankiller's experience of displacement enabled her to
understand even more profoundly the hardships of her
ancestors who were forced onto the Trail of Tears more
than one hundred years before.
