captured a national collegiate title at the NCA event.

Championship is the largest event of its kind in the
world. With teams from across the United States, Mexico,
Japan, and Canada, it is the most widely viewed college
cheer and dance event in the history of the collegiate
spirit competitions.
Competing for the first time in the Universal
Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Cheerleading
Championships in January 2006, the HPU Stunt Team was
named national champions at this particular competition.
Head coach Matthew Parkey joined HPU’s cheer
program in July 2004, the same year he was featured on
the cover of Cheerleader & Danz magazine. He is
a nine-time national championship cheerleader who is
experienced in gymnastics, cheerleading, and
choreography.

4th Annual Hapa Haole
Hula & Music Festival
Hapa haole means half haole... rather half
caucasian. It refers to the music and times of the 30’s
and 40’s when Hawaii was the star of movies by Bing and
Bob, Arthur Godfrey and Charlie Chan. Hawaii Calls was
on the radio.
Today’s modern Hawaiiana revival often
overlooks this vital segment of Hawaii’s history. But
not the annual Hapa Haole Hula & Music Fesitval. The finals will be May 12 at the Hale Koa Hotel
luau grounds. And a first the 1st Annual Hapa Haole
Hula & Music Festival Las Vegas will be held at Bally’s
in Las Vegas, August 17~19, 2006.

The categories include:
• Solo - Ms. Hapa Haole Hula (ages 18~25)
• Solo - Ms. Sophisticated Hula (age 26+)
• Solo – Comic Hula (open to all)
• Group Hula (Kane division, Kupuna division, Wahine
division, Keiki division, and Combined division)
• Solo Vocal Competition (open to all)
Applications and complete information are
available at www.hapahaolefest.org, or by contacting
Alison at (808) 295-3861 or ahartle@hawaii.edu, or
Kaho‘onei at (808) 753-9773 or panokew001@hawaii.rr.com.
The hula winners will receive prizes from PA‘I
Foundation and various sponsors. The solo vocalist
winner will receive a recording contract from Hula
Records and other prizes. Why hapa haole?
Often asked why a Hawaiian activist like
herself embraces Hapa Haole music and hula in addition
to the traditional, organizer Vicky Holt Takamine
replied in an interview with The Honolulu Advertiser’s
Wayne Harada, "Young people don't know the (hapa haole)
music — or know very little about it. I think because
of the Hawaiian Renaissance, the movement to uphold
kahiko, hapa haole has been neglected. My kumu hula,
the late Auntie Maiki Aiu Lake, always said to support
and know everything."
In the same interview, Nina Keali'iwahamana,
who was on the quintessential hapa haole radio show "Hawai'i
Calls," said, "Hapa-haole music has been a very
important part of our culture, in the music and in the
hula," she said. "I think Vicky's moving in the right
direction. For traditional hula, there's the Merrie
Monarch Festival and the Prince Lot Hula Festival. I'm
thrilled that someone won't let hapa haole die."
PA'I Foundation is a non-profit organization
dedicated to the perpetuation, education and
preservation in matters relating to the indigenous
culture and natural environment of Hawai'i. PA'I
Foundation was established in 2001 under the aegis of
Pua Ali'i 'Ilima, a traditional halau hula celebrating
its 26th anniversary and has a membership of
approximately 65 individuals.

4TH ANNUAL WAIKIKI SPAM
JAM(r)
Each place in the world seems to have its
signature food festival. You may have heard about
tomato, ribs, onions or pumpkin, but you have never seen
anything like this. It is time for the annual Waikiki
SPAM JAM(r), the new cultural tradition in Hawaii.
The Waikiki SPAM JAM(r), which starts at
4:00 p.m. and ends at 10:00 p.m., is quickly becoming
one of the most popular festivals in Hawaii because of
its great food and entertainment in a family-friendly
atmosphere. Local residents and visitors alike have made
this an annual tradition. Last year, an estimated
20,000 people attended the event.
Kalakaua Avenue will be closed to car
traffic for the event, and two entertainment stages will
be set up on the street. Between the stages will be a
dozen restaurants serving up SPAM(tm) Classic in many
different ways, so you can experience the enormous
variety of its applications. There are also two
merchandise tents selling SPAM(tm) themed items
including t-shirts, shorts, sport balls, and slippers.
A variety of Hawaiian craft booths will also be set up
on the street. Since the Waikiki SPAM JAM(r) attracts
many families, there is also a popular family tent with
a variety of games and prizes.
The free entertainment is headlined by 2006
Grammy Award nominee, Ms. Raiatea Helm, whose voice will
captivate you with her authentic Hawaiian essence. The
other major headliner is Go Jimmy Go, a Hawaii-based
alternative rock band that now tours America playing in
front of thousands of fans. Other entertainers include
Hawaiian reggae group B.E.T., and popular alternative
music band Missing Dave.
This year, residents and visitors are
encouraged to make a difference. During the SPAM JAM(r)
Street Festival, there will be booths set up by
volunteers to help collect donations of SPAM(r) for the
Hawaii Food Bank.
Foodland Supermarkets on Oahu will accept
monetary donations of $5, $10, or $20 to the Hawaii
Foodbank throughout the month of April. A portion of
the proceeds will purchase much needed cans of SPAM(r).
All participating Foodland customers who make a donation
to the Hawaii Foodbank with their Maika'I Card will be
automatically entered into a drawing for the grand prize
of a trip for two to Las vegas.
As part of the Waikiki SPAM JAM(r),
Outrigger and OHANA Hotels in Waikiki
are offering guests checking in for the weekend a free
upgrade, based on availability, with the donation of a
can of SPAM(r), which will be donated to the Hawaii
Foodbank.
Sponsors of the Waikiki SPAM JAM(r) include
Outrigger and Ohana Hotels,
Hormel Food Sales, LLC, International Marketplace,
Foodland Supermarkets, Waikiki Trader, Royal Hawaiian
Shopping Center, Aloha Airlines, This Week Magazines and
the Hawaii Tourism Authority.
Introduced in 1937 by Hormel Foods, more
SPAM(r) is consumed per person in
Hawaii than in any other state in the United States.
Almost 7 million cans of SPAM(r) are eaten every year in
Hawaii.
